Expertise Areas:

Dr. Burkett’s research trajectory is to reduce health disparities for youth at-risk for or diagnosed with developmental disabilities. She is a qualitative researcher experienced in ethnonursing, community-based participatory research and focus group methods, who has used these methods to inform her intervention research. Her intervention studies are focused on African American, Latinx and low-income families and youth with developmental disorders including developmental delay, autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disabilities. Her current studies are focused on removing barriers to early intervention for children at-risk for developmental delay and their families in poverty. She has a clinical practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner at Cincinnati Childrens for children and youth with developmental disorders.

Dr. Burkett was inducted as a charter member of the Transcultural Nursing Scholar group in 2008. She was awarded a Transcultural Nursing Research Award in 2010 and in 2017 received a Bridge Builder Award for collaborating with Cincinnati Head Start to aid in the fulfillment of their mission.

Present/Future Directions 

Transcultural care is core to promoting the health and well-being of individuals, families and communities. Keeping transcultural care at the center of nursing practice and research can be a mechanism for safeguarding equity in health care.
