The Board of Trustees and the Administration of the Transcultural Nursing Society (TCNS) extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Mr. George Floyd. Every human being deserves to be treated with respect. Dr. Madeleine Leininger, our founder, recognized early in the 1960s that all people, regardless of race, color, or culture, should be respected and cared for with dignity. It is this desire for human dignity for all people that we hold dear as members. Through educational information, conferences, publications, dialogue, and practice, members of TCNS promote the right of all human beings to be treated fairly and equally.
It is with great sadness that we recall the picture of the knee on the neck of Mr. Floyd. We question how anyone could treat another human being in this way. This event calls us to look within ourselves and to inspect our feelings regarding others who are different than us. It is only through thoughtful reflection that our world can heal and become a safer place offering dignity to all. We recognize that most people are not uncaring and unkind, but for those who hold onto this darkness within their hearts, we call for personal change and thoughtful introspection.
Join us in our call for the dignity of all human beings. We commit to promoting kindness and caring while seeking to understand others. We stand against racism in all forms and against any people and acknowledge the pain and hurt that African Americans and others suffer because of this event.
With great sadness and with much hope for a healing of our nation and world, the Society will continue to promote equality and caring.
