Expertise Areas:

Research interests include cultural variations in the response to and management of pain and other symptoms, using primarily mixed methodologies, with both quantitative and qualitative approaches. She has focused on Colombian (Peace Corps Volunteer for 2 years), Mexican (dissertation research), Peruvian, Chilean and Eastern European populations. Dr. Douglas’s policy interests are in the development and implementation of global cultural competence standards, particularly at the organizational level.

Dr. Douglas was board-certified in critical care nursing during her 35+ years caring for patients in intensive care units. She was a charter co-editor of the journal Progress in Cardiovascular Nursing. She was inducted into the American Academy of Nursing in 1998. She received the Leininger Award 1996 for contributions to the field of Transcultural Nursing. Dr. Douglas served as President of the Transcultural Nursing Society from 1994-1996, and was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Transcultural Nursing from 1998-2013. She is a charter Fellow of the Transcultural Nursing Society Scholar group since 2004.

Dr. Douglas has been an invited keynote speaker and/or Visiting Professor/Scholar, both nationally and internationally, most notably in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Nicaragua, Spain, Japan, Beijing, Shanghai, Egypt, Lebanon, & Turkey. She serves as a peer reviewer for 5 nursing journals.
