Transcultural Nursing Society - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Statement

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) are crucial to the pursuit of healthcare for all people.  The Transcultural Nursing Society’s mission, values, and goals compel us to take action to promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for all people within our organization, workplaces, society, and worldwide.

We champion diversity in our organization and in healthcare practice, education, administration, and research through the representation of individuals with diverse perspectives and backgrounds that make up our world. Meeting current and future challenges in healthcare depends on our ability to incorporate historically marginalized people and perspectives into our science, practice, research, education, and administration. Therefore, the Transcultural Nursing Society encourages healthcare professionals in each of these areas to seek opportunities to learn from those with different perspectives.

We seek equity in our world by advocating for equal healthcare opportunities and access for all people across differences of race, age, color, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, religion, national origin, migratory status, disability/abilities, political affiliation, veteran status, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

We strive to create an inclusive culture in our organization, workplaces, society, and worldwide through our purposeful actions, behaviors, and policies that ensure every individual is treated fairly and respectfully, despite differences. In inclusive environments, everyone is encouraged to contribute fully toward the groups’ goals, as well as their own individual goals.

Finally, we aim to foster a sense of belonging by creating safe environments where individuals feel accepted and have a sense of community and connectedness to others. They feel that their perspective is valued and that their presence contributes to the group, organization, or community. Belonging is also fostered by creating opportunities for connections with others who share similar interests, backgrounds, and experiences within the larger group.

As Transcultural Nurses and healthcare providers, we are committed to embracing and celebrating our differences and living out the mission, values, and goals of our organization. We must continue to play our part in building a more just society by embedding diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in our structures and practices.
